Entomology: UGA Honey Bee Program

Young Harris Beekeeping Institute:
Instructors and Staff

Permanent Instructors

Dr. Paul Arnold

Professor of Biology at Young Harris College and co-founder and host of the Beekeeping Institute. A botanist, Paul brings to the Institute a special expertise in honey plants and their pollen.

Jennifer Berry

Apicultural Research Coordinator and Apiary Manager at the University of Georgia. She is actively involved in all aspects of bee research and education at UGA.

Robert Brewer

Towns County Extension Director with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. Robert is a co-founder of the Beekeeping Institute and Coordinator of the Georgia Master Beekeeper program.

Dr. Keith Delaplane

Professor of Entomology at the University of Georgia, co-founder of the Beekeeping Institute, and author of First Lessons in Beekeeping. He has worked with honey bees for 33 years and his research and extension work is focused on Varroa IPM and pollination.

Tom Seely

Professor of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University, and award-winning author of Honeybee Ecology, The Wisdom of the Hive, and Honeybee Democracy.

David Tarpy

Associate Professor of Entomology, Extension Apiculturist at North Carolina State University, and world authority on the social evolution of bees.

Michael Young, MBE

Founder of the Institute of Northern Ireland Beekeeping, Senior British Honey Judge, and inspiration for our own Welsh Honey Certification program.

Keith Fielder is Putnam County Extension Director with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.

Lonnie Funderburg is a Georgia Master Beekeeper and 2-term president of the Alabama Beekeepers Association.

Cindy Hodges is a Georgia Master Beekeeper, President of the Metro Atlanta Beekeepers Association, and 2012 Georgia Beekeeper of the Year.

Dan Harris is a former employee of the UGA Bee Lab and operator of Booger Hill Bee Company in Danielsville.

Eric Katz is a molecular biologist and research technician at the UGA Honey Bee Lab.

Will Montgomery is a Georgia Master Beekeeper and long-time supporter of the YHC Institute.

Brett Nolan is a PhD student at the UGA Honey Bee Lab.

Will Dix is a practicing physician in Athens, a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and Journeyman Beekeeper.

Bill Owens is past-president of the Georgia Beekeeper Association and currently Georgia’s only Master Craftsman beekeeper.

Philip Quinn is past President and 2011 Beekeeper of the Year of Tara Beekeepers Association and technician at the UGA Honey Bee Lab.

Michael Steinkampf is a practicing physician, Director of Alabama Fertility Specialists in Birmingham, and a candidate for Master Craftsman beekeeper.

Linda Tillman is a Georgia Master Beekeeper and host of the popular blog "Linda’s Bees" at www.beekeeperlinda.com.

Damon Wallace is a Georgia Master Beekeeper from Opelika, Alabama, President of the Alabama Beekeepers Association, and Welsh Honey Judge.

Amy Weeks is a Georgia Master Beekeeper and queen breeder from Louisiana.

Nicholas Weaver is a research technician at the UGA Honey Bee Lab.

Virginia Webb is a Georgia Master Beekeeper and 2-time top award winner at the International Honey Show at Apimondia World Congress.
