Research Interests:

My research focuses on the beetle family, Endomychidae, better known as the Handsome Fungus Beetles. I am broadly interested in all areas of their biology, behavior, natural history, and host fungus associations, but my research specifically focuses on the taxonomy and systematics of the group. I am interested in the implications of resolving the subfamilies in a phylogenetic context to elucidate the evolution of the family and the divergence and sister-group associations of the subfamilies, as well as the relationship of the family to other families in the Cerylonid-Series and the superfamily Cucujoidea.

I am interested in a variety of theoretical approaches that utilize molecular sequence data from mitochondrial (COI, COII, 12S, 16S) and nuclear (18S, 28S, wingless, H3) genes to develop the most robust phylogenetic hypothesis possible for Endomychidae. With a phylogeny, it is possible to examine the internal relationships of the family, make informed decisions about the taxonomic classification of Endomychidae, and allows me to examine trophic shifts within the family. I am also interested in morphology within the family, as well as the fossil record. I have an overall goal of eventually incorporating fossil data into existing analyses, thereby offering glimpses into the early evolutionary history of the group.

In addition to my phylogenetic interests, I am also interested in the alpha-level taxonomy and natural history of the group with the bulk of my taxonomic work focused on the basal subfamily Anamorphinae. For my dissertation, I am completing a revision of the New World anamorphine genus Bystus Guerin-Meneville, 1857, as well as other taxonomic works such as an annotated distributional checklist of the endomychids of the world, a complete review of the natural history of the group, various electronic keys and field guides, and several new descriptions of fossil and extant taxa (adults and larvae).
